Recently, the Cape Town Central Police Department successfully arrested three suspects suspected of using signal jammers to steal cars at the intersection of Church Street and Ring Street. This operation not only demonstrates the efficient cooperation between police and security personnel, but also demonstrates the important role of technology in maintaining social order.

On Wednesday, September 7, alert security personnel from the Cape Town Central Improvement District (CCID) found three men wandering around the corner of Bree Street and Longmarket Street during a routine check. CCID Night Manager Gary Dyssel had been paying attention to their movements and called for backup.

Moments later, one of the three men crossed the road and hid something in a small parking lot near Church Street. His accomplice then walked up to a white Toyota Hilux, opened the door, pulled out a blue sleeveless bomber jacket and a small handbag, and headed towards Church Street. Dyssel and his support officers moved quickly to trap them at the corner of Church Street and Ring Road Street, where they were able to recover all the suspected stolen items and a signal jammer.

Captain Ezra October, spokesperson for Cape Town Central Police, confirmed the arrests and said the suspects face charges of possession of vehicle vandalism tools. October noted that the criminals operate in syndicates and use electronic device alarm remote controls to carry out thefts within the CBD.

To combat this threat, police advise drivers to take the following precautions:

  • Manually lock your vehicle and double-check your door handles to avoid remote control interference.
  • Put valuables out of sight and preferably in the boot before setting off.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, especially when pulling into a parking space.
  • Avoid displaying valuables such as handbags, mobile phone accessories or laptops in your vehicle.
  • Always be vigilant
  • Multi-party collaboration and sustained action

The arrests were made possible by the collaborative efforts of police, CCID security personnel and the City CCTV Cyclops team. The three suspects were quickly arrested with the help of police and law enforcement reinforcements, and the owner of the car was found. Although the owner could not identify the stolen items, the police found prohibited items in the handbag, further confirming the suspect's criminal behavior.

Cape Town Central Police Station has recorded an increase in multiple crime categories in the latest quarterly statistics, in response to which they have launched daily intelligence operations and publicity activities in collaboration with law enforcement and CCID to curb these crimes. There has been an increase in common robbery, aggravated robbery and assault with serious bodily harm (GBH) cases, which makes it particularly important to strengthen security measures.

Through this successful operation in Church Street and Ring Road Street, Cape Town Central Police Station has demonstrated its firm determination to combat car interference and theft. This not only enhances public trust in police work, but also highlights the key role of technology in maintaining order in modern society. With the implementation of further security measures and technological means, Cape Town Central Police Station will continue to be committed to protecting the property and personal safety of citizens.
